UMC acquires CDMA 450 license
Ukraine's second largest mobile operator Ukrainian Mobile Communications (UMC) will pay US$ 19.5 million for its CDMA-450 mobile license.

Vladimir Oleinik, representative of National Commission for Communications Regulation (NKRS), said that of the total, UMC would pay US$ 1.9 million for the right to offer services and US$ 17.6 million for frequency usage. UMC must make the payment within a month, Oleinik said, and if it does not, the license would be cancelled.

UMC provides mobile services using both GSM and NMT-450 standards. UMC planned to upgrade its outdated network to CDMA-450, but wanted to focus on providing mobile Internet services rather then voice services through the upgraded network, UMC’s General Director Adam Voyatsky said.

UMC was awarded its CDMA-450 license on July 13. The company, controlled by Russian mobile operator MTS, had about 15.1 million mobile users as of June 30, according to Advanced Communications & Media (AC&M).
