Telefonica, which earlier this week launched a bid for Britain's O2, was one of 13 companies selected by Tunisia to bid in the privatisation, which is expected to raise as much as US$ 1.7 billion.

"Telefonica has decided to withdraw from the Tunisie Telecom privatisation process," a company spokesperson said.
