Last week, the government announced that a contract to manage Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) had been awarded to Canadian firm Sasktel.
Minister Chenge told Parliament that TTCL was losing money. He said the government decided to enter into a management contract with Sasktel in order to avoid TTCL incurring further losses. The government has not disclosed the duration of the contract.
Sasktel won the contract in a contest that included twelve other competitors. Sasktel also unsuccessfully bid to purchase a 35% stake in TTCL when the operator was privatised in 2000.
The Telecommunications Workers Union of Tanzania (Tewuta) has written a letter to the Minister for Infrastructure Development seeking clarification on the criteria used to award Sasktel the contract. TTCL workers are against the contract. They charge that Sasktel would only add an unnecessary burden to both the government and the Tanzanian people.
