The Rwanda Utility Regulatory Agency (RURA) is attempting to establish telecom charges that would enable lower income segments of society to take advantage of telecommunications services.
According to the Director General of RURA, Dr. Faustin Ntezilyayo, the initiative is to be supported by the ITU. He lauded the efforts of ITU for the regulatory initiative expected to enhance utilisation of telecommunications services. Without disclosing when and how the exercise would be conducted, Ntezilyayo hailed the ITU for the training accorded to staff of RURA on how to calculate costs and taxes for telecommunication services.
"The support is to improve our (RURA) skills, and regulating telecommunication charges to be in harmony with those of other sectors of our economy," he said.
"There must be proper coordination between regulatory agencies and telecommunication sole proprietors to set charges that are convenient to the local majority whose income and access to such a service are limited," ITU consultant and telecommunication manager, Abosee Akue-Kpakpo noted.
