MTC modifies telecommunications regulations

Peru's Transport and Communications Ministry (MTC) has made changes to some telecommunications regulations and the national telecommunications law, and is seeking comments from interested parties.

The MTC intends to modify the regulations to encourage investment – particularly investment to advance the development of mobile service in rural areas. To promote infrastructure expansion and fixed line services, the MTC is proposing a more flexible regulatory framework that would allow the licensing of operators in addition to those currently licensed.

The proposals also seek to reduce the amount of time operators are given to reach interconnection agreements. The ministry is proposing that operators have 90 days to reach agreement on interconnection, and if not, telecommunications regulator Osiptel would have 30 days to intervene.
