The Nepal Telecom (NT) Employees' Association and the Nepal Telecom Workers' Union have agreed to resume protests against the prolonged closure of the country’s mobile service.
Earlier, the unions had postponed their planned June 17 protest following assurances from management and the outcome of talks to resume mobile service, which were suspended immediately after the royal proclamation of February 1, 2005.
Despite the protests, the government only resumed service on 40,000 post-paid lines in Kathmandu Valley starting May 2. NT, which has 249,000 mobile subscribers including 173,200 pre-paid lines, has been incurring large losses since February 1.
