State telecom operator makes payment to government
Namibia Post and Telecom Holdings (NPTH) has paid a dividend of US$ 88 million to the Government.

NPTH, which is wholly owned by the Government, is the holding company for MTC, fixed-line monopoly operator Telecom Namibia and Namibia Post. The dividend, said to be the largest ever paid to the State by a parastatal, included proceeds from the sale of 34% of mobile operator, Mobile Telecommunications (MTC), to Portugal Telecom. Portugal Telecom acquired the stake in MTC in July for US$ 135 million.

Discussing Portugal Telecom's investment in MTC, Minister of Works, Transport and Communication, Joel Kaapanda, said, "the advantages of these investments are enormous: job opportunities and skills training for our people as well as considerable revenue generation activities to fund various Government social programmes."
