| Portugal Telecom (PT), itself the target of a takeover offer, has won the tender for privatisation of 34% of Namibia's Mobile Telecommunications. South Africa's MTN was the other operator that was selected to participate in the bidding.
PT is expected to aid with the technological development of the African carrier and become an active participant in the company's management.
Mobile Telecommunications has approximately 400,000 clients. Portuguese telecoms and Internet company Sonaecom last month made a US$ 13.3 billion takeover offer for PT. PT has since rejected the offer.
