Govt considers forming telecom infrastructure firm
Malaysia’s government is considering setting up a telecommunications infrastructure firm to manage the state’s plans to expand high-speed Internet access.

Malaysia is hoping that technologies such as wireless broadband and fibre optic technology would increase data transfer speeds and become more affordable alternatives to copper wires for Internet access.

"We are going through a series of consultations with industry players. The intention is to bring fibre to homes," Energy, Water and Communications Minister Lim Keng Yaik said.

"If Malaysia wants to remain competitive and further integrate into the global economy, then we will have to ensure the nation's communication infrastructure continues to keep pace if not lead with the latest advancements.

"This could only be achieved in collaboration with the private sector that can bring the latest technology to the consumers," he added.

The new company could include state telecom provider Telekom Malaysia in competition or in collaboration with the private sector, Lim said. TIMEdotCom, recently awarded a 3G license, has one of the country's most extensive fibre optic networks.
