| Mobile operator Cingular could face sanctions from the Jamaican government for missing a deadline to launch services based on a license obtained in 2004, Science and Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell said.
"I have asked the spectrum management authority to notify them that they are in breach of the regulations and that we intend to deal with the matter quickly," Paulwell said last week.
"While we await their determination…time has run out on them, because we did give them one year to utilize the spectrum; they have failed to do that," Paulwell said to parliament.
In early 2004, Cingular, then doing business as AT&T Wireless, agreed to buy Jamaica's fourth mobile license for J$ 300 million (US$ 4.97 million), after two years of negotiations. Jamaica's other mobile operators are Cable & Wireless, Digicel and Oceanic Digital.
