Unbundling regulations should include service quality provisions
Telmex Chile believes Subtel, the telecommunications regulator, needs to tailor its upcoming unbundling decree so the focus is on service quality guarantees, Telmex Chile general manager Eduardo Díaz Corona said.

"The discussion has been highly centred on costs and prices for unbundling networks, but the key element is to guarantee an excellent quality of service. It is fundamental to establish the rules of the game, because currently there are no rules," he said.

Commenting on the company's projects for 2005, Díaz Corona said projects include the recent launch of IP Centrex, a system that allows nationwide IP services, and a project to interconnect several cities in Region VIII.

"We cannot provide investment figures but we are working to expand coverage for our clients and grow our network according to these opportunities," Díaz Corona added.

Diaz Corona also expects to see a large number of IP telephony implementations in Chile this year since IP telephony helps make networks more efficient and reduce costs.

"The Chilean market is very sophisticated, by global as well as local standards, and is immersed in a level of competitiveness that demands global operating standards. The industry is highly sensitive to intelligent networks and implementation of IP telephony over those networks," he said.
