| The government of Cambodia has set up Telecom Cambodia, a wireline provider in Phnom Penh, and intends to privatise the company by 2008.
Telecom Cambodia is the only operator owned and operated by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication. Cambodia was one of the first countries in the region to liberalise its telecommunications sector and to allow private ownership. These steps were taken in order to encourage the redevelopment of infrastructure destroyed during the civil war. Today, there are six operators with eight fixed and mobile networks in operation – all privately owned except for Telecom Cambodia.
Telecom Cambodia starts out with 700 employees along with US$ 40.3 million in assets. Although owned by the government, the plan is that the company be run as if it is already a private company. There is no indication of how Cambodia will go about the privatisation process, whether by public stock sale or by selling the company via auction.
