Regulator wants rules to benefit prepaid users
Brazil's telecommunications regulator Anatel will introduce new regulations to strengthen the rights of the 62 million prepaid mobile phone users. Brazil has 76 million mobile phones, 81% are prepaid.

The validity of credit for prepaid mobile phones will be extended to six months, from the current 90 days, according to Bruno Ramos, Anatel's regulations and communications manager.

"Any customers that purchases new credit will have their old credit extended automatically for 180 days," Ramos said.

Through the new regulations, if a customer decides to switch operators, the customer will have the right to compensation for any remaining credit. Currently, customers lose the right to existing credit if they change providers.
