Embratel and Net To Launch Local Telephony
Brazilian long-distance operator Embratel, a unit of Mexico's Telmex, plans to launch residential telephony service using the network of Brazil’s largest cable television operator Net, also a unit of Telmex.

Carlos Henrique Moreira, Embratel’s president, said that the target is to launch the service by the end of 2005. The launch depends on approval of the transfer of assets of Telmex in Brazil to Embratel – including Telmex Brasil and 49% of Net – by telecommunications regulator Anatel. According to Moreira, the process is in its final stage of analysis by the regulator. The transfer of assets to be conducted as early as the end of September.

The planned residential telephony services will use IP technology, which is rapidly growing as a low-cost alternative to traditional phone service.
