According to a report by Algerian News Digest, Algeria’s telecommunications regulator, Autorite de Regulation de la Poste and des Telecommunications (ARPT), is auctioning two licenses to operate public satellite mobile communications networks.

The two licenses will enable the setup and operation of two Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) systems. The opening of the envelopes containing bids will take place on November 24, 2004, ARPT said in a statement.

The GMPCS licensing is part of the telecommunications sector reform process. Mobile satellite telephony is considered an important part of the telecommunications market, ARPT director general, Ahmed Gaceb, said.

Thuraya is the only satellite provider currently operating a satellite mobile telephony network in Algeria, which is operated in conjunction with state-run operator Algerie Telecom and the private company KPointcom. The service targets mainly large foreign companies with activities in southern Algeria.

ARPT is also making another attempt to auction two fixed telephony licenses. The invitation for tenders will be launched in mid-December 2004.
